Weaving

Weaving cloth by hand is satisfying work. I learned to weave in the textile program at The Rhode Island School of Design. To be able to design cloth for the textile industry, a designer needs to well understand how cloth is constructed.  I found that my favorite parts of the process were designing fabric, dying fibers, and hand weaving them into cloth. Making handwoven scarves allows me to work at the things I enjoy most. My work now is a little industry of its own. I start by choosing natural fibers that accept dyes well. All of my weaving is then done on small hand looms using weave structures that have been woven for generations. The patterns in the cloth come from three things working together, the dyes that I have used, the threading of the loom, and the sequence of pedals that my feet press as I weave the cloth. Each scarf is one of a kind, or one of a few. Every one carries my blue square weavers mark.
